The last three years may have been challenging but a new post-pandemic ‘normal’ way of working is now emerging. Many people are returning to the office, however remote and hybrid working are here to stay, and that means having a proper home office that’s fit for purpose. No more laptops on the sofa or makeshift dining table set-ups!

Creating a viable long-term WFH space can take all sorts of forms. “A loft conversion is one of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to create extra space in your home,” advises one local building firm. But there are many other home improvement options including garage conversions, garden offices or building extensions that can accommodate the needs of your business activity while adding value to your property.

Whichever way you decide to go, here are some of the key factors you should consider:

Avoid power supply issues

Modern workspaces need lots of electrical sockets! It’s unsightly and, frankly, dangerous to have trailing cables everywhere or sockets overloaded with clumsy plug adaptors. Make sure you plan for more than enough power outlets, including at least some USB plug sockets, in the right places.

Get optimal internet access

Fast, reliable internet access is non-negotiable, particularly if you work in a data driven environment and use video calling (and who doesn’t these days?). Compare broadband and fibre packages available in your area and make sure you get a good signal in your new office.

Prioritise natural daylight

If you have the opportunity to design your new home office from scratch, make sure there’s plenty of natural light. Windows, rooflights, glazed doors – it all helps to maximise your productivity and the overall feelgood factor while working from home.

Enjoy the view

Place your desk near a window with a nice view. Whether you look out onto the garden, have rooftop vistas or sea views, it’s what you’ll be looking at all day while you work, so choose a view that will keep you inspired and motivated.

Add artificial lighting

Supplement natural daylight with artificial lighting that creates a well-lit and balanced space in which to work. In addition to ‘the big light’, use a multi-layered lighting design with fixtures and fittings that provide adjustable task lighting near your workstation and accent lighting to add interest.

Think about soundproofing

If your work is particularly noisy (or you have a booming voice), or you don’t like being distracted by unwelcome noise coming from your family or neighbours, fitting your home office with soundproofing insulation or acoustic plasterboard may be an excellent idea.

Consider your health and wellbeing

Make sure your long-term WFH space is a place that supports your wellbeing, both physically and mentally. Use natural, non-toxic materials and finishes where possible and choose colours, decorations and furnishings that make you feel positive to perform to your best abilities!
