The Growing Demand for Drones in Everyday Business

It’s true to say drones have had a bad reputation in previous years. I’m sure we all remember the Gatwick drone incident of December 2018. It’s understandable how many of us are suspicious of these futuristic looking buzz boxes that are increasingly seen hovering in the sky.

It’s true to say drones have had a bad reputation in previous years. I’m sure we all remember the Gatwick drone incident of December 2018. It’s understandable how many of us are suspicious of these futuristic looking buzz boxes that are increasingly seen hovering in the sky.

The truth is though, with increased regulation from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and the fast paced advances in this technology, drones (or Unmanned Aerial Systems – UAVs) are going to become a far more regular feature in our world and they are already proving themselves invaluable across multiple sectors.

As well as the obvious uses like video production and photography, drones are making a huge difference in search and rescue, surveillance, disaster response, wildlife monitoring, firefighting, remote medicine delivery and agriculture.

Large areas of crops can now be monitored quickly and easily for damage and stress. Roofs and large structures can be surveyed more safely and cost effectively. Buildings can be assessed for heat loss with aerial thermal imaging cameras. These are just a few examples of how drones are proving themselves.

As a qualified professional drone pilot, there’s no wonder I champion these little work horses, but it really is true to say that they are making a difference. Many businesses around the UK are waking up to how these aircraft can impact their business. To give you an example, a fellow drone pilot was recently contacted by a warehouse who had a particularly interesting problem/challenge. The business in question had been piling stock on the very top shelf of their rather large warehouse over recent years and had lost track of what was there. They realised that using a forklift to move each individual piece would take many manhours of work and so contacted a drone business to ask if it was possible to fly a drone and photograph all the items so they could be easily logged. Sure enough, what would have taken over a week to complete with a forklift was done in less than a day.

Drones really do add a new dimension to your business, they offer unique solutions and never before seen perspectives.

I recently travelled to Scotland to create a promotional video for an adventure company who hire out Landrover Defenders with tents on the top. If I hadn’t had a drone, the film I created would have been much less dynamic and dramatic than what I was able to deliver. I also work with a large international renewable energy company and along with ground based video equipment I am able to capture their solar panel installations with ease.

There’s no doubt that drones are here to stay and there’s no sector that isn’t benefitting from what they offer.
