How to be a Cycle-Friendly Employer

As we search for healthier and more sustainable modes of transport that are convenient, cheaper and often quicker than travelling by car, cycling is re-emerging as a strong contender. According to recent research, a third of commuters would choose to cycle to work over other forms of transport, with 2/3 of those commuting by bike saying they will cycle more in the future. Changes made to the Highway Code at the beginning of the year to improve safety for cyclists and other vulnerable road users are also helping to boost the growing trend.

So, what can employers do to encourage cycling among their workforce, and why should they do anything at all? Let’s start with the how.

  • Communicate regularly with staff about the benefits of cycling, take part in annual Cycle To Work days and similar initiatives, and ensure that your senior leadership team sets a good example.
  • Enrol your business in a cycling scheme such as this one that team members can join in order to receive significant discounts on their next purchase of a new bicycle or other equipment.
  • Encouraging your employees to cycle to work starts with the provision of safe bicycle storage during the day, along with showers, changing rooms and lockers for your cycling team members.
  • Organise in-house cycling competitions or fun team challenges, with rewards and incentives to those who make the most effort, or take part in a charity cycling event near you, to get more people involved.
  • Consider investing in a company-owned bike pool that employees can use for commuting, off-site meetings or lunch breaks, providing greater choice and flexibility at no extra cost for team members.
  • Become a Cycling UK accredited Cycle Friendly Employer with an award that is the international benchmark for active travel culture and infrastructure in the workplace, showing the world that you are committed to climate change and staff wellbeing.

Why should employers promote cycling to work?

Companies who actively support cycling to work broadly tend to do so for two reasons: the pursuit of more sustainable business practices and greater employee wellbeing.

Taking an environmentally responsible stance in business, many companies realise that switching from car to bike use is a great way to reduce their carbon footprint and cut ‘indirect’ emissions. In financial terms, current commuting patterns can cost time and money in terms of traffic jams and delays, cost of parking and mileage allowance claims.

What’s more, promoting cycle-friendly policies in marketing and recruitment campaigns will boost your company’s eco-credentials, which can have a positive brand impact that aligns with eco-conscious customers and job seekers, particularly among younger generations.

Encouraging team members to commute by bike shows obvious support for their physical health and fitness levels. In addition, cycling has mental health benefits too in terms of relieving stress, boosting mood and reducing anxiety. In terms of HR benefits, a healthier team means lower staff sickness levels and a motivated and more productive workforce.
