Cloud confused? Factory Internet offer a little bit of clarity on the subject..
Cloud computing can be a rather confusing area, we hear talk of hybrid cloud, multi Cloud, public and private cloud.
You may also wonder if you should have a cloud first strategy, how you keep your cloud secure, will your costs be phenomenal?! We will explore those areas further in later posts I promise, for now though we can offer a bit of clarity about all those different clouds.
Very much in a nutshell Cloud computing is utilising ‘shared resources’, so you can have prompt access to additional services as and when you need, you can scale up and you can scale down on demand. This ‘can’ save you costs in the long run if you have frequent fluctuation in resource requirements. However, Cloud may not always be the best solution cost wise, here at Factory we are agnostic and work on a business case basis to ensure we recommend the right fit for your required business outcomes and of course budget.
The main providers out there are Amazon Web services, Microsoft Azure and Google Compute. Others include IBM, Alibaba and Oracle.
Public Cloud – Here you will have access to compute resources hosted in Data centres managed by a 3rd party cloud provider such as those above, rather than owning and managing these resources yourself on premise or within a co-located service. The above providers have many organisations sharing the same infrastructure.
Private Cloud – Model adopted by orgs with high security requirements that cannot allow them to utilise shared resources and will be deployed on servers owned by the organisation. A private Cloud allows you complete control over data and security to meet specific compliance requirements and tend to be Pharma or Government type customers.
Hybrid Cloud – Utilisation of a combination of several Cloud environments and often include a mix of Public and private Cloud with some on premise kit too.
Multi Cloud – This approach is like that of a hybrid environment in which an organisation uses services from multiple Cloud providers.
