From 1^st April 2027, new “Simpler Recycling” requirements will apply to all workplaces in England, regardless of size and number of employees. Simpler Recycling requirements have applied to workplaces with 10+ FTE since April 2025.

Under these rules, all workplaces are required to separate recyclable materials from their general waste. These include:

Glass bottles and jars
Metal drink cans and food tins
Plastic food containers and bottles
Paper and cardboard
Food waste
Garden waste

As this is a legal requirement, enforcement officers will be undertaking checks. They may ask to see evidence that businesses are complying with the new rules.
