The new exotically code-named 8th-generation processors from Intel are now on the market offering faster connectivity and improved power saving.
What Intel dubbed Whiskey Lake and Amber Lake during the development phase are now the generation U and Y-series chips. The chips have already been included in the latest devices available from equipment manufacturers.
Gary Jowett from Computer & Network Consultants in Brighton said: “These are primarily for lightweight laptops, two-in-one devices and hybrids . They could be ideal for companies re-equipping a mobile workforce or planning to expand field services. They could also help your employees carry out the many work tasks required while on the move more quickly – using kit that’s not cumbersome to carry around.”
The core processor speeds are 1.8 GHz and 1.6 GHz for the U series and 1.5 and 1.3 GHz for Y chips. The U series are quad core which means there are four separate sections that execute instructions from the core processing unit (CPU). This speeds-up multi-tasking on your computer so you can be working on a number of different things at the same time and not slow down performance.
All the processors include ‘Gigabit Wi-Fi’ so there’s no need for equipment manufacturers to include a separate Wi-Fi module. This saves space and makes the processors ideal for extra-slim devices.
Intel claims the new integral Gigabit Wi-Fi can support a wireless connection that’s 12-times faster than current wireless networks.
Gary said: “Such connectivity claims need to be fully evaluated in relation to your company’s own wireless infrastructure. But what’s unquestionable is that these chips are more energy-efficient than previous processors. Intel claims some devices may be able to run for 16 hours without plugging into the mains.”
There’s also a new audio solution which enables computers to wake up at the sound of the user’s voice and offer similar voice-based interaction to Amazon’s Alexa for verbal enquiries.
Intel’s own description of the difference between the Whiskey Lake processors and the Kaby Lake predecessor shows that space has also been saved by removing in-built cameras and opting for a slot-in USB camera instead.
Sussex businesses seeking to upgrade their technology should clearly consider buying devices with these new processors. However, it’s best to seek advice from an independent IT consultant who will be able to fully evaluate all the equipment available and match the right processor and computer to an organisation’s present and future needs.
Gary said: “All businesses have a finite budget so the latest devices that include these processors may seem more expensive than other kit on the market. However, the price tag may outweigh the improvements in productivity and operational efficiency these new processors can support for your business to be more successful in the longer term.”
