Business Groups across the UK Regions support Gatwick's Northern Runway Project

Business groups from across the UK have today written to Grant Shapps, Secretary of State for Transport, to express their support for the Proposals by Gatwick to utilise the Northern Runway in scheduled operations.

The Chambers of Commerce from Belfast, Isle of Man, Guernsey, London & Sussex represent over 7,500 businesses and are encouraged by the plans which will bring much needed air capacity and so improve connectivity between the regions and London and the South East.  This is especially important for domestic business locations where rail connectivity is not a practical alternative.

Kay Leslie, Executive Director of Guernsey Chamber, said: “Guernsey Chamber places connectivity at the heart of our workstreams as an island jurisdiction and recognises that easy access to London is a pivotal part of the business landscape. We welcome any changes which will offer more flexibility around air links.”

Richard Burge, CEO, London Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said: “LCCI supports Gatwick Airport’s plans for the Northern Runway, which will create more capacity and increase accessibility to UK regions that aren’t connected to the capital by rail. London is a gateway for investment into the UK and this proposal will ensure that we have better connectivity across the country, which in turn will spread growth and opportunity to all corners of the UK.”

Ana Christie, Chief Executive of Sussex Chamber of Commerce, added: “In order to meet passenger demand and our increased desire to travel, bringing the Northern Runway into use would provide greater customer choice and generate greater economic benefits for the region. The expansion would support the revival of the area through new opportunities to work with colleagues across the country in procurement, supply chain spending and jobs growth. “
