Preparing Your Business for Winter: Why Sussex Enterprises Need to Build Water Resilience Now

As temperatures drop and winter approaches, businesses across Sussex are reviewing contingency plans, energy efficiency, and facility maintenance.

There is another critical operational priority that demands immediate attention this year: water resilience.

Following an extended period of unseasonably dry conditions, water resource levels across the South East remain significantly lower than average. With meteorological forecasts pointing toward a dry November, the natural recharge of our regional reservoirs and underground aquifers has been delayed. Conserving water and safeguarding your premises against cold-weather disruptions is essential not only for regional supply security, but for protecting your bottom line.

Understanding the Regional Picture: Sussex Water Resources
While prolonged deficits in rainfall mean efficiency remains vital, long-term risk management is actively underway.

As part of this proactive management, South East Water has submitted a precautionary application for a Non-Essential Use Ban (NEUB) covering parts of the Sussex supply area.

What this means today: It is important to note that this is an application only—no additional restrictions on non-essential commercial water use are currently in effect.
Why it matters: The precautionary step underscores the real pressure on local catchments. We conduct biweekly reviews of resource levels, operational activities, and risk mitigation strategies to track aquifer recharge and network stability. By taking action today, Sussex businesses can collectively reduce demand and strengthen regional security throughout the colder months.

What South East Water is Doing to Prepare for Winter

To mitigate the operational risks associated with freezing weather and protect customer supplies, We have rolled out extensive network readiness programmes:
Strengthening Infrastructure: Fixed and mobile emergency generators have been tested across critical water treatment works, backed by a secured minimum 7-day operational fuel reserve and verified trace heating across essential assets.

Strategic Transfer Schemes: Key network links have been commissioned and tested, including the 12km Bewl to Cottage Hill Pipeline, allowing water to be moved dynamically between Bewl Reservoir and Cottage Hill to bolster local supplies across Kent and Sussex.

Expanding Response Capabilities: Field standby rotas have been doubled across peak winter months, contractor repair teams have been pre-positioned, and 24/7 telemetry monitoring has been enhanced to rapidly detect and repair network bursts.
Targeted Hotspot Support: Direct operational support and focused monitoring are deployed across vulnerable network zones, including Canterbury, Whitstable, Herne Bay, Tunbridge Wells, East Grinstead, and Maidstone.

Step Up Your Winter Prep: Prevent Burst Pipes & Hidden Leaks

While network improvements strengthen regional supply, on-site plumbing remains the responsibility of each commercial property owner. Freezing temperatures bring the risk of burst pipes, sudden flooding, and disrupted operations. When frozen water expands inside commercial plumbing, it can cause fractures that only reveal themselves once the thaw begins—often leading to catastrophic water damage and business downtime.

Key winter resilience steps for your facilities:

Lag exposed pipework: Insulate external pipes, fittings, and internal runs in unheated spaces like basements, storage units, and attics.

Locate your internal stop tap: Ensure key staff members know where the emergency shut-off valve is located and verify that it turns freely.
Service heating and plumbing assets: Check boiler pressure valves, header tanks, and external taps for drips or slow leaks.

Monitor unoccupied buildings: If your premises close over the holiday period or on weekends, consider draining down non-essential systems or keeping background heating at a frost-protection level.
