Remembrance events taking place across Wealden
Residents across Wealden will be able to remember all those have lost their lives and made sacrifices in wartime conflicts at many annual services of Remembrance in the coming days.
In addition, Wealden District Council chairman Councillor Ron Reed and fellow council members will be attending events in towns and parishes throughout the district.
Councillor Reed said, “Remembrance parades and services across Wealden are always very well supported and are a chance for individuals and the community to honour those who have lost their lives in two world wars and the many conflicts that have taken place around the world since then.
“It is the time to remember the service and sacrifice of so many whether they served 100 years ago or today and reminds us that we must all continue to strive for a better more peaceful future.”
On Armistice Day (Friday 11 November) Councillor David Watts will lay a wreath at the Polegate War Memorial on behalf of Wealden District Council following a short service.
On Sunday 13 November there will be a parade from Polegate British Legion to St John's Church, Church Road, Polegate, followed by a service. Those who wish to march should meet at RBL Polegate before 10am. Those going directly to the church need to be seated by 10.15am.
In Uckfield on Friday 11 November, there will be a short service and the firing of maroons at the War Memorial at the Church of the Holy Cross at 11am.
On Sunday 13 November, the annual parade and Remembrance Service will take place at The Church of Holy Cross, Belmont Road, Uckfield, at 3pm. Following the church service Councillor Reed will lay a wreath on behalf of the council and there will be a playing of the Last Post.
In Hailsham on Sunday 13 November, there will be a church service at 9.30am at Hailsham Parish Church, Vicarage Road, before a parade from the Charles Hunt Centre for the laying of wreaths at Hailsham War Memorial at 11am. Councillor Neil Cleaver will lay the wreath for Wealden District Council.
Also on Sunday 13 November, there will be a parade at 10.15am from Croft Road Car Park for the laying of wreaths at Crowborough War Memorial at 11am ahead of a church service at 11.30am at Service at All Saints Church, Chapel Green, Church Road. Councillor Reed will lay the wreath for Wealden District Council.
In Heathfield on Sunday 13 November, Councillor Tom Guyton-Day will lay a wreath on behalf of Wealden District Council at the Cade Street War Memorial at 10.50am following a service starting at 10am at All Saints Church, School Hill/Church Street, Old Heathfield.
Nearby, following a 10.45am service at All Saints Church, Waldron, Heathfield, there will be a walk to the Village War Memorial where Councillor Michael Baker will lay a wreath on the council’s behalf.
Other Remembrance services taking place across the district include Willingdon and Jevington Parish Council’s Remembrance Service on Friday 11 November at 11am outside the Parish Office at the Triangle, Willingdon.
On Sunday 13 November there will be a parade from Wish Hill at 10.15am to the Remembrance Church Service at 10.45am in St Mary’s Parish Church, Willingdon.
There will also be the traditional annual service at the Ruthless Memorial at Butts Brow, Willingdon, on Sunday 13 November at 3pm.
