No Account Managers, No Subcontractors: Thirty Years of Doing This Myself

Eight weeks before a 125-delegate company kick-off in Dubai, the client had no venue and no AV supplier, the previous one had walked away! Soundcheck built that job from the ground up in a fortnight, for delegates from fifteen countries. It's a fair summary of what thirty years in this industry teaches you: not how events are supposed to go, but what you do when they don't.

A Sussex business, built on Sussex work

I'm based in Steyning, right on the doorstep of Worthing, the Adur valley and Brighton and Hove, and most of my calendar is filled with events across the whole of Sussex, conferences, exhibitions, galas and corporate days for local businesses who'd rather deal with one person than a call center. That local footprint matters to me. When a client in Worthing books me again eighteen months later for a different event, or a Brighton venue asks for me by name because of a job I did there last year, that's the reputation I actually care about, not a national footprint, a Sussex one.

Priced the way I'd want it priced

I've seen plenty of AV quotes padded with kit nobody ends up using. I don't work that way. My core package — sound system, radio microphones, a screen and 3000-lumen projector, a mixing desk, and me on-site all day — starts from £950 plus VAT at the West Sussex base rate. Bigger conferences add a second technician, more radio mics and a lectern setup, scaled to the room rather than a fixed formula. I also offer event consultancy for clients planning a conference or exhibition from scratch — the venue questions worth asking before you sign, the load-in details that only bite a fortnight out.

Why there's no one else in the chain

Soundcheck has no sales team fielding your first enquiry and no subcontractor turning up on the day instead of me. The person who prices your event and the person running it are the same person. Nothing gets lost in a handover, because there's never a handover. That mattered on a 150-delegate conference in London where 15 of the delegates were hard of hearing. The fix wasn't just a louder PA! It was a wireless silent-seminar headset system, so those 15 attendees could follow along comfortably and feel included, and I'd rather be the one who spots that need early than the one explaining afterwards why it got missed.
