After 8 seasons of bloodshed, brutality, and scheming, plus the fact that not everyone needed to die, what actually settled their rivalries was discussion and mediation.

If only they could have availed themselves of a skilled mediator, it could have all been settled by the end of season 1.

So, the following are five simple reasons why mediation would have easily been the better option.

• A skilled mediator would have taken control of the situation and opened up a dialogue between the parties;

• The mediator would have been able to speak to everyone involved and gain a thorough understanding of the arguments and positions;

• The mediator would have engaged in ‘reality testing’ with the parties, (a process where the mediator carefully questions and where appropriate challenges a party) to help that party fully appreciate the respective strengths and weaknesses of their case.

• The mediator would be the best-informed person, so would be uniquely positioned to help broker a resolution; and

• An experienced mediator would be able to tell the parties what would likely happen if they did not find a resolution, thereby saving them all so much (just look at what happened in Seasons 1-8).

Can you imagine how much money, time, energy, bloodshed and crushing pain would have all been avoided if only the Starks, the Lannister and the Targaryens had made the smart choice and engaged the services of a skilled mediator?
