Since the introduction of the Union Customs Code (UCC) in May 2016 the benefits of Authorised Economic Operator status have come into sharper focus. Traders now have the option of applying to become AEO (C - Customs Simplifications); AEO (S - Security and Safety) or both combined. The tangible benefits of AEO now include reductions or removal of the guarantees that are now mandatory under UCC to operate special customs procedures such as inward processing and customs warehousing. Traders will have to demonstrate that they operate to AEO standards to benefit from these procedures Other benefits include faster customs clearance, particularly when trading with those countries with whom the EU has Mutual recognition Agreements. AEO is often a pre-requisite for international public sector and defence supply contracts, particularly in The United States. Post "Brexit", The UK must have an AEO system because of our commitment to World Customs Organisation standards. Although nothing is certain, if import/export declarations become a requirement for all EU countries the government will have to create a border infrastructure capable of dealing with this. The current thinking is that there will special facilitations within this infrastructure for traders that have achieved AEO status. If this happens, there may be a very significant increase in AEO applications. Strategically, it may be that now is a very good time for traders to consider AEO to take advantage of the current benefits and to position themselves to protect their trading position in the post "Brexit" world Who Should Attend?
